Searching, Renaming and Cleaning Up Your Online Interviews

Posted January 31, 2012 by |

As our users start to play with our app and get comfortable with the tool, they tend to discover little features we don’t always have time to talk about in live demos or quick overview videos. A few of these involve organizing their completed transcripts by using the search function, renaming them, and taking notes.

1. Searching. This is an easy one that makes organization much more manageable. To find specific transcripts, type key words or phrases into the search bar and click ‘search’ (hitting enter will not trigger the search function). This will help you find specific verbatims, suggestions, or other information without having to read every single interview.

2. Renaming. By double-clicking on the desired transcript, a user can rename it for easier analysis later on. For example, changing the name from “transcript 1” to “positive design #2” vs. “positive design #1.” This time-saving technique will do wonders when you have 30 interviews to sort through for specific reactions.

3. Notes. As mentioned earlier, notes allow researchers to pull specific information as they go, instead of having to analyze all of the interviews at once.

2012 Advertising Spend Increase: Will More Ads Make An Impact Or Fall Flat?

Posted January 24, 2012 by |

Research Money

Last week, eMarketer published a report that showcased how US Online Advertising sales are projected to increase over 23% this year to nearly $40 billion in revenue.  The other noteworthy element about Online Advertising is that for the first time, it will surpass the dollars spent on print magazine and newspaper advertising combined.  Total advertising spend for print, magazines, TV and online combined will total nearly $140 billion in the US.

Two things struck me about this piece:

1.  The fact that despite shifts in the mix, overall advertising (including print, magazines, online and TV) is projected to increase by over $10 billion in 2012 vs. 2011.  That is a whole slew of new commercials, videos, banners and design work that needs to be produced.  And how many of these new elements will have time for any traditional research or formal testing prior to launch?  With limited time and lean staffs, we are anticipating more pressure for insights and research teams.

2.  With more and more advertising messages hitting the marketplace each year, how will agencies and brands make theirs stand out from the crowd?  GutCheck is seeing customers coming to us each week with their campaigns before creative is finalized to see how audience will react to it before it is too late.

We argue that if you can squeeze in 48 hours while creating your next campaign, you can make sure that it won’t miss the mark with your target market.

One example from last week was finding people who had recently had an over-the-phone tech support or help experience in the last 6 months, or who had paid to utilize premium, in-person tech support services.

Have a unique audience you need to find? Simply shoot us an email, or even send us a tweet,  and we’ll be happy to help.

Extra Support: Analyze as you go

Posted January 16, 2012 by |

I like to cook. A lot.

Actually, I like to put ingredients together in a tasty way. I can do without the chopping and the cleaning up.

But when I was a little girl, my mother taught me to prepare ahead of time, and then clean up as I worked. So after I used the cutting board, I would take a few seconds to wash it off. Or after I had mixed in the bowl, I would clean the bowl out before proceding to the next step in the recipe.

I think the same rule of thumb could benefit researchers doing their own interviews. Services jobs have become very popular over at GutCheck, mainly because our clients don’t have the time to do a large volume of research on their own. And we’re happy to help out! But researchers really can benefit from doing the interviews themselves, and aggregating data as they collect it. The GutCheck tool allows moderators instant access to their transcripts. We also allow you to add notes:

I like to add verbatims as notes as I chat, leaving me less grunt work when I have 10 or 20 transcripts in the end. Not only does it minimize final analysis, but chatting and pulling quotes as you go also means you’re getting better insights, since they are real time. Patterns emerge more quickly, and working so closely with the data might mean discovering a pattern so clear, you can quit chatting and start reconfiguring your concept, package or message as you go.

Clean up as you cook! Just as the meal tastes better when your kitchen’s clean, your data is more accessible when you organize it along the way.
